Obra:Stefan Krikl *Painting, portrait of gipsy Cante hondo singer Cabeza de Hacha "Canitas" Doing his rendition: "Estan clavadas dos Cruzes en .el monte del olvido" This painting was done for Mr. Guzman of Mexico city at his request to have him painted a la Francis Bacon.

Stefan Krikl:

*This portrait of Canitas was done in 1970 /one of several attempts/ at the request of a friend of mine living at that time in Mexico city. It was done in the style of than famous and much admired British painter in Latin America, /not my favorite/ named Francis Bacon.
"canitas" sang "dos cruzes" only when drunk and never ever for money at any party to my knowledge. We have had the privilege to hear him once and have never forgotten the pain it has caused us upon hearing this lament for his boy who was killed by a stray bullet during the civil war. I was told that the child lived but died later due to an infection. Personally, outside of the bullfight there exists no greater expressive art than that of the cante jondo. The painter who can express himself as these singers do has not been born yet!
p.s. on a note of interest. In the 70's, Margaret Thatcher when wanting a portrait done of her, it was suggested it be done by either Bacon or Freud, to which she replied: Oh, no, not that horrible little man who paints these bloody awful pictures" and chose Freud.
I suppose that by now she wished he did her, for his "bloody awful" pictures now fetch millions!
